Woman, 26, Killed Pedestrian In Washington Township Hit-And-Run: Police

A Vineland woman was accused of killing a Turnersville man in a Gloucester County hit-and-run crash, authorities said.

Destiny Esquilin, 26, was charged with second-degree leaving the scene of a fatal crash, the Washington Township Police Department said in a news release on Thursday, Nov. 21. She was wanted in the crash that killed 58-year-old John DeMarco on Monday, Nov. 4.

Investigators said DeMarco was struck by an unknown vehicle while walking on the southbound side of Fries Mill Road near the intersection with Adele Drive. Officers responded to the scene at around 8:09 p.m.

DeMarco was rushed to Cooper University Hospital. He was pronounced dead at the Camden medical center.

According to his obituary from Egizi Funeral Home, DeMarco worked at the Cardinal Village senior living facility in Sewell. He enjoyed vacationing in Wildwood, along with playing the lottery, cards, and bingo.

DeMarco would even play bingo with the Cardinal Village seniors when he wasn't working.

"He was always more than willing to help a hand, tell a story, or just have a conversation with whoever was in the room with him," his obituary read. "His love for his family was contagious and the memories he’s left his family will forever be treasured."

Detectives identified a silver 2021 Honda Civic as the car wanted in the crash. Police found Esquilin and the Honda at a home in Vineland on Wednesday, Nov. 20.

A Vineland High School graduate, Esquilin was a college basketball player who started her career at Rowan College of South Jersey - Cumberland and transferred to Warner University in Florida. She also played as a graduate student at Felician University in Rutherford.

Esquilin was arrested and released to await a future court date.
